Esophageal Manometry Study

Why am I having this study?

The doctor has ordered a test of your esophagus to tell how it is functioning. This is known as an Esophageal Motility Study or an Esophageal Manometry. It will help determine why you are having pain or difficulty swallowing. The test measures the strength of the muscles in your esophagus and how well they work during a swallow. It also measures the function of the upper and lower esophageal sphincters – the two valves that must work well to prevent acid reflux or regurgitation or to allow food to pass into your stomach.

How is the study done?

A small, soft catheter is passed through your nose and into your esophagus and stomach, while you are given sips of water to swallow. The catheter is connected to a computer which is recording the various pressures found within the digestive tract. The test will take about one hour to complete.

What should I do to prepare?

When you are registered for the test, the technician will ask you about your current medications and which ones to hold before the exam. Please do not have anything to eat or drink 6 hours before the exam.  If you are on blood pressure medications or other heart medications, you will need to check with your physician. He or she will decide if you should take these the day of the exam.

What will happen that day?

You will be in the department for approximately 90 minutes on the day of the exam. We will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. When completed, the results will be reviewed by the doctor. We will share the results with you and your referring doctor.
