What am I having this study?
This test is important in determining how often and how much stomach acid is refluxing into your esophagus and throat during a 24-hour period. The test, though slightly uncomfortable to some, provides very valuable information in planning your treatment for heartburn or voice disorders caused by reflux.
What can I expect?
A very thin flexible tube is passed into your esophagus through your nose and connected to a small portable computer, about the size of a “Walkman” radio. This will record information about the acidity of your esophagus and upper throat. You will wear this on your belt when awake and under your pillow when asleep. During the test you will be required to avoid some foods and encouraged to eat others. You should not snack during the test or drink outside of meal times, except for water. You will also press buttons on the computer telling us when you eat, sleep, take medications, etc.
The next day you will return to the lab, where the wires will be removed and the information from the recorder loaded onto a computer for analysis. You will need to spend about 30 minutes at the lab on each day.
What should I do to prepare?
The technician will ask you questions about your medications and will tell you which ones we want you to stop taking before the test. You will be asked to fast at least four to six hours before the test begins. You will be given written instructions about how to use the device, how to take care of it, and what foods to eat and what to avoid.
Can I drive?
Yes, you may drive to and from the laboratory for this test as you will be given no sedation. |
