John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarship

The John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarship was created in 2013 through a gift from the John F. Stickford Revocable Trust. Mr. Stickford was a long-time resident of Hancock County and had a great respect for those working in the healthcare field. He wanted to promote excellence in nursing in his community through a scholarship for local nursing students.

The Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Directors oversees this scholarship program. The amount of the scholarship is determined annually and covers the cost of the recipient’s tuition for one year. Prior recipients are eligible to renew their scholarship for each year they are in a nursing program.

To be eligible for the John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be accepted into a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science program at an Indiana public university. The program must be accredited through the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). If the recipient does not complete the nursing program, the full amount of the scholarship must be refunded to the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation.
  • Sign a contract stating that they will work for one year as a registered nurse or nurse practitioner in Hancock County or Shelby County, preferably at Hancock Regional Hospital or Major Hospital, for each year they have received the scholarship.

Scholarship recipients are chosen each year by a committee that includes members of the foundation’s Grants and Scholarship Committee as well as the head of the Nursing Department at Hancock Regional Hospital or a designated nursing representative. Interviews will likely be conducted with applicants. Selection criteria include academic achievement, community or extracurricular involvement, and experience in nursing activities.

The funds appropriated for this scholarship will be paid directly to the school of the recipients, and students are responsible for submitting copies of their transcripts to the foundation at the conclusion of each semester.
