The SANE program is transforming care for local survivors of sexual assault.
Sexual contact without consent can be one of the most traumatic experiences imaginable. Survivors—who may have experienced both physical and emotional trauma—might not know where to turn or how to seek help. Fortunately, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program is reducing barriers to care in East Central Indiana.
Located within the Knightstown Health Care Center (224 W. Main Street in Knightstown), the SANE program is operated by Hancock Health, in partnership with Henry Community Health, Rush Memorial Hospital, and the prosecutors’ offices of Hancock and Henry counties.
Services are compassionate, confidential, accessible, and free.
The SANE program’s confidential services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Besides treating physical injuries, specially trained nurses and nurse practitioners conduct free examinations that document patients’ stories and preserve legal evidence for law enforcement officials. Services may also include providing relevant medications and connecting patients to counseling or other community resources.
The SANE program at the Knightstown Health Care Center—reachable at (765) 345-5572—offers free, private examinations from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Thursday, and from 8 AM to 2 PM on Friday. The facility is patrolled for added security.
On weekday evenings and weekends, qualified nurse examiners remain on call around the clock and can be accessed through Hancock Regional Hospital or Henry Community Health.
Once, many East Central Indiana residents had to travel an hour or more for proper examinations after sexual assault. Today, the SANE program provides a closer and more convenient experience—one where survivors are heard, cared for, and supported.
